Worfolk_Cottage

Worfolk is a large stone built cottage in Staintondale, between Whitby and Scarborough, on the North Yorkshire Coast.   The Cottage is set in about ¾ acre of grounds, which include a former Quaker burial ground and a small paddock.

In 2007 Worfolk Cottage is undergoing redevelopment and refurbishment.

To find out more about our vision for the development, click here.

We are developing Worfolk to reflect our concern about the environment, climate change, the end of fossil fuels and the need for sustainable development. We know Worfolk to be a treasured and spiritual place and want to make Worfolk a beacon for the future.
The Worfolk cottage refurbishment will be the first fully ‘carbon- neutral’ development within the National Park.  The design, by Andrew Yeats of Eco Arc (the architect for the project), will include energy saving and sustainable features.

The Cottage has had Quaker connections since 1659 and has been in the ownership of Pickering & Hull Monthly Meeting for about 100 years.

For the past 34 years Worfolk Cottage has been available to use as a place of recreation and spiritual retreat for a variety of groups including families, walking and outdoor pursuit parties, people with special needs, young people and charitable bodies. One of the richest sources of inspiration about Worfolk are the journals. Worfolk Cottage has been available as suggested in Edith Sturge's will since 1957 - nearly 50 years. (The Tulley family were among the first users in that year!).
